Snap, Crackle or Pop - Should You Be Worried About Noisy Joints?

Many people notice their joints making a snap, crackle, or pop during movement. It might happen when you stand up, stretch, squat, or even when you crack your fingers. While these sounds can seem concerning, the good news is that they are usually completely normal — especially if there is no pain involved.

Why Do Joints Make Noise?

Our joints are complex structures made up of several tissues that work together to allow smooth movement. These include ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and synovial fluid. As we move, these structures naturally glide and shift over one another.

Because of this, it’s common to occasionally hear or feel sounds coming from a joint.

Snapping or Popping

A snap or pop often occurs when a muscle or tendon moves across a bone. This tends to happen more in joints that feel tight or stiff. As the tendon slides over the bone during movement, it can create a noticeable snapping sensation.

This is very common in areas like the hip, knee, shoulder, or ankle, particularly during exercise or stretching.

Crackling During Stretching

The crackling sound many people hear while stretching is often caused by synovial fluid, which is the lubricating fluid found inside joints.

This fluid helps reduce friction and allows the joint to move smoothly. When pressure changes inside the joint during movement or stretching, small gas bubbles within the fluid can form and collapse, creating the cracking sound we hear.

This is also what happens when people crack their knuckles.

Should You Be Concerned?

In most cases, noisy joints are nothing to worry about. If there is no pain, swelling, or loss of movement, joint sounds are typically harmless.

However, if your joint noises are accompanied by pain, swelling, or a feeling of instability or ‘locking’ in the joint, then it may be worth getting it assessed.
